LOCAL ARTIST EXHIBITS WORKS INSPIRED BY 50 YEARS OF ISLAND LIFE

Local artist Peter Carnegie is exhibiting a selection artwork from a 50-year career spent chronicling Jersey’s seascapes and landscapes on canvas. The exhibition, which will take place at the White Space Gallery, Jersey Potteries between 18^th - 31^st October, is a tribute to Jersey’s coastal scenery from the perspective of a yachtsman as well as an artist.

Mr Carnegie, who trained at the Ruskin School of Drawing at Oxford and Brighton College of Art, is exhibiting for the first time in 16 years. As well as chronicling Jersey’s coast and maritime history, his current exhibition will include paintings inspired by voyages around the coast of Brittany and the Mediterranean, and is a combination of more recent works with those from an earlier period.

Mr. Carnegie said “All my work is linked by a common commitment to the objective study of nature. Stylistically, my painting has changed over the decades but the inspiration remains the same – the sea and its tides, the beauty of the natural landscape and the changing weather and seasons.”

Jersey art critic John Falle said “Peter Carnegie is a yachtmaster whose seamanlike eye coordinates to produce most enchanting rhythmical marine pictures. Sailors spend much of their time in community with nature and Peter’s ability to articulate nuances of the light is of interest to us all.”

The exhibition will run between 9.30 and 5.30 pm daily from Tuesday 19^th to Monday 31^st of October at the White Space Gallery, Jersey Potteries. Sunday openings are from 10am – 4pm.

In the summer of 2009, Jersey artist Virginia Colback found herself stranded by bad weather on the Ecrehous reef, where she spent the enforced exile sketching and painting. The experience intensified her fascination with the Island's marine and coastal environment. A sailor as well as an artist, Virginia aspires in her new work to celebrate an age-old relationship in a new way.

Open Studios 2011 celebrates the wealth of talented artists and makers producing work in Jersey. Now in its fourth year, this event gives you a chance to discover the diversity in the visual arts. You can learn about the artwork and the artist, and have the opportunity to purchase directly from them.

Jersey’s Artists will open up their studios to the public over two weekends – 18th & 19th, 25th & 26th June 2011. Artists taking part include painters, drawers, jewellery makers, photographers, textile artists and sculptors – working in a town studio or a barn in the country. It is a chance for locals and tourists to get an insight into an artist’s life and work.

As well as this – make sure you don’t miss the exciting exhibition at the Weighbridge showcasing all of the artists’ work. Helping you decide which studios to visit. The exhibition is held in shipping containers!

Open Studios 2011 has been organised by the Jersey Arts Trust and kindly sponsored by HSBC Private Bank. With thanks to Huelin Renouf for loaning the containers and WEBB for the space to put them!

Known for his contemporary drama and published poetry, Tiziano Fratus has, in recent years, dedicated his passion to the appreciation and enhancement of the heritage and secular trees in his region, the Piedmont in Italy, and in the world. This exhibition is a collection of his findings, based on his book: Homo Radix. Appunti per un cercatore di alberi (Root Man. Notes for a Tree Seeker).

He collects stories about arboreal literature (tales, novels, poems, essays, diaries) and tells histories
about the age of scientists and botanists travelling around the world, talking about the first Europeans who have discovered, described and introduced extra continental species in our gardens and landscapes.

“I began to wander across streets, the parks, the expansive avenues of cities, looking at the beauty of the trees you can find anywhere, trying to recognise their species, their age, the forms of the leaves, the proportions and geometries of the trunks, of the barks.” Tiziano Fratus

The spirit of art is alive and well in this exhibition of work by ten of Jersey’s finest octogenarian artists. The exhibition, curated by Gabrielle Radiguet, aims to draw attention to the value that art plays in maintaining our sense of health and wellbeing. The exhibition will be opened by Laura Goldstein of Adult Education at Highlands College and will coincide with Age Awareness Week in the UK.

An exciting collection of work that explores some of the key art movements and styles of the twentieth century will be on show at the Jersey Museum including paintings, drawings and sculpture from some of our 20th century all time greats. The exhibition will show artistic giants such as Pablo Picasso, Fernand Léger, Roy Lichtenstein and Henry Moore. This is a rare chance to see some of the great Modern Masters and their world-class examples of modern art.

The exhibition will also be showing the work of Matisse, Degas, Twombly, Ryman, Pissarro, Hockney, Calder, Rauschenberg, Miró, Spencer, Cocteau and Derain. An incredible line up of renowned modern artistic greats.

Six Jersey artists come together to explore their identities. With a time constraint of less than 36 hours they will be exploring self, the use of various media and materials, space. All the work must be created within this time constraint and on site at the gallery in time for the preview.

Ralph Elliott was an extremely popular figure and a well-respected artist in Jersey. Drawing was the mainstay of his practice, providing the foundation for his series of work on urban landscapes and his more recent ‘Angry Man’ paintings. In December 2009, Ralph passed away after a long fight with cancer.

Hockney, Emin, Blake and Blu - Branchage bring an astounding collection of British art to Jersey for an exclusive show, all pieces for sale. 'Whatever Else Remains' is on display at 13 Cattle Street, St Helier.

Signed paintings and prints available at the show include works by such eminent living artists as David Hockney and Bridget Riley, Turner Prize artists Tracey Emin and Damien Hirst, distinguished pop artist Peter Blake, and even Banksy.

Six London Galleries have contributed pieces of work to this exclusive show, which has been curated for Branchage by Bristol-based artist Lucas Price.

As well as seminal high profile artists, the show features work by up-and-coming talent and a focus on Urban art. Notable Jersey artist Jason Butler has also contributed several pieces to the show.

New Zealand professional visual artist Karl Amunsden has been the National Trust for Jersey’s artist in residence, for the past 6 months. During his time he has produced a broad range of paintings inspired by this site specific residency.

Karl’s work involves the telling of human histories. The collection of work looks at man's relationship witht the land as well usinf characters from Jersey's history such as St Helier.

His tutor was a Parisian pupil of the French cubist master Jean Metzinger and from her he inherited the absolute belief that Drawing is the basis of all worthwhile image making. To that end he draws with paint rather than ‘Painting'
